Overview

Directs, plans, organizes and manages volunteer activities, which include recruitment, training, support, special events, volunteer assignments and activities. Ensures that volunteer component of the Hospice Program is in compliance with legal, regulatory, and risk management issues consistent with program and Agency philosophy, goals and objectives. Works under general supervision.

* Plans, directs, and manages all hospice volunteer services to ensure full compliance with Medicare Conditions of Participation (CoPs), CHAP standards, New York State Department of Health (DOH) regulations, and organizational policies, including documentation of volunteer program cost-savings as required by CMS.

* Ensures volunteer services are represented within each Interdisciplinary Team and incorporated into the patient's plan of care, and confirms that volunteer roles are clearly defined, documented, and aligned with the IDT's goals for patient and family support.

* Fosters meaningful volunteer engagement that provides companionship, emotional support, social connection, and respite to patients and caregivers.

* Supervises and evaluates volunteer performance, overseeing assignments, documentation, and follow-up to maintain quality and consistency, and ensures competency validation for volunteers providing direct patient or family support.

* Develops, maintains, and audits volunteer records and documentation systems to ensure regulatory compliance, including background checks, health clearance, orientation, training, competency validation, and annual education updates for both direct and indirect volunteer roles.

* Monitors and reports volunteer activity and hours to ensure compliance with the 5% volunteer hour requirement and maintains accurate reporting of Hospice Volunteer Direct Time (HVDT) and Hospice Volunteer Patient/Family (HVPF) data for administrative and/or direct patient-care volunteer roles.

* Oversees program compliance and maintains continuous survey readiness for CMS, CHAP, and DOH requirements, ensuring that volunteer policies, procedures, competency records, and cost-savings documentation remain in a survey-ready state. * Tracks and analyzes volunteer program data to evaluate performance, identify trends, and recommend strategies for continuous quality improvement and QAPI integration.

* Designs and implements volunteer training, competency development, and continuing education to maintain regulatory compliance and promote volunteer excellence in hospice care, including orientation and annual education requirements.

* Leads recruitment and retention strategies to build a diverse and dedicated volunteer base that reflects community needs and supports the evolving needs of patients, families, and the organization.

* Collaborates with academic institutions and external volunteer organizations to strengthen partnerships, coordinate volunteer placements, and expand community engagement, and ensures that external partners meet hospice standards for supervision and training.

* Coordinates closely with hospice leadership and clinical teams to align volunteer services with strategic priorities, patient care goals, and organizational initiatives.

* Performs all managerial duties, including supervision of the volunteer services staff team, performance evaluations, and oversight of program resources and budget allocations to ensure effective and compliant operations.

* Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education:
Bachelor's Degree in a health, behavioral science, social science, or related discipline required

Work Experience:
Minimum of three years of progressively responsible health care or community-based experience required Prior volunteer experience and supervisory/management experience preferred

Strong organizational, facilitation and presentation skills preferred Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills required

Ability to be flexible and work independently required


Pay Range

USD $70,200.00 - USD $87,700.00 /Yr.
