About This Talent Pool West Virginia University is building a talent pool of qualified professionals interested in future Academic Advisor and Senior Academic Advisor opportunities across institutional colleges and departments. About the Opportunity Academic Advisors and Senior Academic Advisors play a critical role in supporting student success by guiding students through academic planning, persistence, and degree completion. Advisors ensure students are equipped with the information and support needed to navigate higher education and make informed decisions related to academic, career, and personal goals. Opportunities may exist at varying levels based on experience, complexity of advising responsibilities, and scope of leadership or programmatic involvement. The classification and pay grade may also vary and will be posted with any approved position. This posting is not tied to an active, approved position. What You'll Do Depending on the level and department, responsibilities may include:
- Providing timely and effective academic advising to support students in selecting, matriculating into, and completing degree programs.
- Developing and maintaining multi-year academic plans using degree audit and planning tools (e.g., DegreeWorks).
- Monitoring student progress, persistence, and completion, revising plans as needed.
- Supporting students on academic probation, deferred suspension, or reinstatement, including development of academic success plans.
- Conducting outreach to at-risk students identified through early alert or midterm processes and referring them to appropriate support services.
- Interpreting and applying university policies, procedures, and catalog requirements.
- Utilizing student information systems (e.g., Banner, Student Success Collaborative) to track academic progress.
- Collaborating with campus partners including career services, recruitment, and central student services.
- Participating in orientation, recruitment, academic programming, and commencement-related events.
- Serving on college- or university-wide committees and initiatives that support student success.
- Maintaining compliance with federal and institutional regulations, including FERPA.
- Senior-level opportunities may include additional leadership, mentoring, program development, data analysis, or strategic responsibilities.
Qualifications
Academic Advisor
- Bachelor's degree required at a minimum
- At least one (1) year of experience in academic advising, counseling, or student support services
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered, and all qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Senior Academic Advisor
- Bachelor's degree required at a minimum; master's degree preferred
- Based on the academic unit, a master's degree may be required to cover teaching responsibilities
- Additional years of progressively responsible advising or student success experience
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex caseloads, initiatives, or mentoring responsibilities
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered, and all qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Experience with student information and advising systems (e.g., Banner, SSC Campus, DegreeWorks)
- Knowledge of developmental, appreciative, intrusive, and prescriptive advising approaches
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical abilities
- Ability to work with sensitive information confidentially
- Interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to educate and support diverse student populations
