Minimum Experience/Education

  • Bachelor's degree in recreation, sport management, kinesiology, or a related field
  • Experience managing a pool


Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

  • Master's degree in higher education, recreation, sport management, kinesiology, or a related field
  • 1-3 years of experience working in collegiate recreation and/or aquatics
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of aquatics, pool maintenance, safety standards, and risk management


Duties and Responsibilities
Facility Management (40%)

  • Facilitate daily operations of all aquatic facilities, including the University Recreation Center indoor and outdoor pools and the Roy Fielding Aquatic Center in Belk Gym
  • Serve as the primary pool operator, including maintaining the permits for all three pools
  • Ensure all facilities operate within required risk management procedures and oversee the implementation of standardized safety practices
  • Collaborate with the Outreach & Engagement team to develop and execute strategic marketing initiatives, ensuring increased visibility of UREC facilities
  • Maintain facility operations pages on the UREC website
  • Review daily reports and respond/delegate any necessary action as appropriate
  • Maintain accurate usage data and regularly assess facility operations to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and compliance with university, state, and national standards and best practices


Supervision (40%)

  • Supervise student employees, including Lifeguards, Head Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, and other aquatics staff
  • Facilitate student employee trainings and meetings that ensure job responsibilities are able to be met, as well as the development of leadership and other career readiness skills

Department Leadership and Administration (10%)

  • Actively participate as a member of the UREC professional staff team, including professional staff team meetings and assigned department committees
  • Ensure that the UREC mission is achieved and values are upheld
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of department strategic plans and annual goals/priorities
  • Advocate for UREC and foster campus and community partnerships to advance physical activity and holistic wellbeing

General Administration (10%)

  • Attend and actively participate in all mandatory Health & Wellbeing Unit, Student Affairs, and UNC Charlotte meetings and trainings
  • Serve on Health & Wellbeing Unit, Student Affairs, and UNC Charlotte committee and working groups as assigned
  • Actively participate in NIRSA and/or other relevant professional associations
  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Operations

Other Work/Responsibilities
Sensitive Duties

Direct access to, or responsibility for, information or areas designated by the University as safety or security sensitive. Direct access to, or responsibility for, cash and cash equivalents, credit card information, University property disbursements or receipts, or extensive authority for committing the financial resources of the University. Master key access to buildings, residence halls, or other secure facilities.
Independence and/or Administrative Authority
The Coordinator will work independently with oversight and supervision of areas of responsibility with the expectation established and communicated by the Director of the Unit. The Coordinator will meet with the Associate Director on a regular basis. Actions would be expected to be for the betterment of the population served and positively represent the University at all times. Integrity with planning, fiscal management, and other duties are expected at all times.
Level of Guidance or Supervision the Position Receives and From What Source(s)
The Coordinator reports to the Associate Director of Operations and indirectly to the Director of Recreation. The Associate Director will provide feedback regularly through formal and informal interactions, and the Coordinator is expected to keep the Associate Director informed of all relevant job responsibilities, projects, and issues.
List Position's Responsibilities for Hiring, Terminating, Training, etc. of Subordinates
The Coordinator is responsible for hiring, terminating, training, disciplining, etc. all direct reports (full-time and part-time) and will provide indirect supervision of all other student staff within the UREC operations team.
