Introduction to the job

As a Summer Intern in Mechanical Design Engineering, you will participate in designing, building and testing portions of the EUV lithography light source and/or associated metrology. You will work on sub-systems involving robotics, mechatronics, precision mechanics, and/or opto-mechanics. Precision machine design at ASML starts with understanding the functional requirements and deriving specifications. You will collaborate with scientists, engineers and system architects in a multidiscipline project team to develop concepts, perform engineering analysis, build and test prototypes, generate detailed CAD designs, create engineering drawings, partner with suppliers, and support system integration and testing.

Your Assignment
  • Develop and document mechanical designs EUV test systems from concept to completion and testing.

  • Work with the project lead engineer to develop, analyze, and fabricate component/assemblies.

  • Create mechanical system/subsystem specifications to meet performance requirements

  • Create detailed CAD drawings to be used for the manufacture.

  • Analyze/select materials and verify design accuracy.

  • Define test plans, perform testing and write test reports.

  • Provide effective presentation and written evaluations to communicate concepts, designs, test results, etc.

  • Calculating mechanical tolerance stack ups, specifically as they effect optical alignment.

  • Analyze the mechanical and thermal stability of optical assemblies using FEA and other analytical tools.

  • Contribute to the development of alignment and assembly processes for optical instruments

  • Collaborate with other engineering groups such as Optics engineers and Systems engineers on optical sub-assembly design.

  • Collaborate with vendors on the fabrication of mechanical parts, mechanisms, and optics

  • Able to read optical and/or mechanical drawings.

  • Collection and documentation of mechanical engineering best practices

  • Internship project responsibilities can be partially determined by the candidate's interest area(s) and background.

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Job description subject to change at any time

Education and experience

We are seeking an individual with a strong background in mechanical design and engineering. A background in mechanical design of mechatronics, precision design, or complex optical systems is desirable, as well as good complex mechanical system intuition.

  • Candidate towards a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering with minimum 2 years completed.

  • The hired candidate must have ability to communicate effectively in the English language both written and oral.

  • Mechanical design exposure to kinematics, dynamics, material properties and behavior, and structural analysis.

  • Experience with 3D solid modelling for design conceptualization and realization.

  • Basic experience with mechanical analytical techniques, including "first principle" engineering equations and Finite Element Analysis such as stress, strain, deformation, modal response, etc.

  • Demonstrated ability to derive conclusions from analysis and make practical recommendations.

  • Strong technical writing, communication and presentations skills.
