The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board-certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. | Essential Job Duties |
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled
Veterinary Assistantto join our Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center. This role is central to providing high-quality medical care, ensuring patient safety, and supporting the educational mission of our teaching hospital. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment and possesses a strong commitment to large animal welfare.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Patient Management
- Provide comprehensive technical support for all equine and farm animal patients.
- Directly manage hourly treatments, constant monitoring, and daily husbandry care.
- Act as a primary responder for triage and treatment of emergency caseloads.
- Expertly assist veterinarians with physical examinations, specialized treatments, and safe animal handling and restraint.
- Communicate professionally and effectively at all times, maintain professionalism in emotionally charged situations, and provide high-quality customer service.
Hospital Operations & Administration
- Maintain infectious disease protocols to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
- Manage inventory control, including supply ordering, purchasing, and billing accuracy.
- Oversee equipment maintenance and coordinate necessary repair schedules.
- Ensure flow sheets are accurate and facilitate seamless communication with ancillary hospital services.
Teaching & Mentorship
- Play a vital role in our educational mission by assisting in the training of veterinary students, interns, and house officers in clinical skills and patient care.
Requirements & Schedule
Availability: Ability to work beyond scheduled hours when needed. Participation in an on-call schedule, including weekend and holiday rotations, is required to ensure 24/7 patient care. Skills: Strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple hospital departments. Experience: Previous experience with large animal handling and veterinary technical procedures is highly preferred. Physical Capability: Ability to lift 75-90 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations and maintain physical work for extended periods of time.

Qualifications
| Minimum Experience/Education |
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

| Preferred Qualifications |
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics and participate in problem solving and team advancement.
- Registered Veterinary Technician in the state of NC.
- Experience as an equine technician in a clinical setting, preferably referral/tertiary care.
- Experience as a technician in a veterinary teaching facility.
