What You Can Expect

As a Steamfitter, you will work across the University of Iowa main campus in Iowa City and the satellite campus in Oakdale. You will perform preventive maintenance and repair services on utility distribution piping systems that support steam, domestic water, heating hot water, and chilled water for cooling. Campus systems include direct buried and tunneled distribution infrastructure, along with sanitary and storm sewer systems.

A typical day includes preventive maintenance and repair of utility distribution piping systems and servicing department equipment such as diesel powered pumps, compressors, and backflow prevention equipment. You install, operate, troubleshoot, and repair high pressure systems operating at 90 psig or greater. Your work includes servicing steam pressure reducing stations, expansion joints, steam meters, steam traps, and steam valves.

You inspect and service direct buried, pre insulated, and large diameter domestic and chilled water mains, along with associated valves and fire hydrants. You maintain hot water lines, compressed air lines, air regulators, storm and sanitary sewers, and utility access structures. You install piping systems and equipment including pumps and valves, and perform repair or fabrication work using arc, gas, Heli arc, and spot welding techniques.

You interpret and maintain diagrams, schematics, system logs, drawings, and utility documentation. You assist with coordinating building shutdowns for mechanical utility service work, ensuring customers and stakeholders receive proper notification and that all work prioritizes employee and customer safety. You determine job site work sequences and safety procedures, procure materials, coordinate outages, complete assigned work, and return systems to service.

Reporting to the Mechanical Distribution Supervisor, your roles and responsibilities include:



  • Maintains, repairs and installs distribution piping systems including steam, condensate, heating hot water, chilled water, domestic water, and compressed air.
  • Performs preventive maintenance work on all associated equipment and structures.
  • Works with the components of the following systems: pumps, fans, air compressors, auxiliary equipment, expansion joints, traps, gauges, and valves.
  • Operate and troubleshoot steam pressure reducing stations.
  • Operates pipe threading machine and uses associated hand or power tools.
  • Operates distribution valves for shutdown and repair of various pipeline systems.
  • Completes lockout & tag out of equipment and distribution systems.
  • Performs system testing and correctly starts and warms up utility systems to protect equipment and co-workers.
  • Inspects and cleans Distribution Structures, utility equipment and facilities in all areas of the utility distribution systems.
  • Maintains safe working conditions in accordance with site rules, policies and practices of local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



What You'll Bring



  • A Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED or equivalent
  • Four years' experience in one or more aspects of the trade, pipefitting, welding, plumbing, or similar; or a combination of work and education such as an apprenticeship, trade school or military training.
  • Knowledge of work processes used when working with steam at pressures greater than 90 psig.
  • Knowledge of utility systems and equipment
  • Knowledge of tools and methods necessary to troubleshoot and maintain utility piping systems
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques used in the steam and piping trades
  • Knowledge of trade occupational hazards and safety precautions while working in confined spaces, aerial or elevated locations, extreme temperatures, excavations, and other environmental caused conditions
  • Knowledge of building and piping codes, utility standards, and safety programs as governed by rules, regulations and guidelines of local, state, and national safety codes, equipment manufacturers, and others
  • Experience reading and understanding blueprints, schematics, control system drawings, and repair manuals
  • Experience with welding techniques and equipment
  • Experience maintaining records and system documentation
  • Ability to perform basic measurements, and math computations
  • Ability to analyze system problems, recommend, and implement system changes
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with other department personnel, vendors and suppliers, students, staff, and the public



Additional Details



  • A minimum of a state issued driver's license, and the ability to obtain a commercial driver's license in the future. This Employee will be operating company owned vehicles
  • Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
  • You must be available to work a rotating 24-hour on-call schedule
  • This position requires that you have a personal phone for on-call or emergency notifications
  • Must be physically capable of frequently standing; walking; balancing; sitting; climbing (ladders, stairs, ramps, catwalks, and the like as required); kneeling; pushing; pulling; lifting100 lbs.
  • Must be physically capable of entering and working in a confined space (underground utility vaults and tunnels; small, enclosed areas and the like) as required
  • Must be physically capable of wearing protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to:
  • Fall protection equipment


  • Hardhat, Safety shoes Eye Protection (goggles, welding hood, safety glasses, face shield)


  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally
  • Ability to train and instruct employees on safety and work tasks
  • Ability to meet highest attendance requirements
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to use a company computer, and work with Microsoft Office software applications
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions
  • This position consist of 50% of outdoor work, while performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions



Compensation

Hourly Range: $27.40 - $42.00 USD hourly

This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.

ENGIE complies with all federal, state, and local minimum wage laws. Actual salary offered may vary depending on geography, experience, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors.

In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for a competitive bonus / incentive plan.
