MaineHealth's Department of Surgery is seeking a pediatric ophthalmologist to join a well-established pediatric ophthalmology practice in Portland, Maine. The pediatric ophthalmologist is employed by Maine Health, but the practice is currently located within a private multispecialty ophthalmology practice in Portland, close to Maine Health's flagship hospital, Maine Medical Center. NICU screenings and inpatient consultations are provided at Maine Medical Center and outpatient surgeries are performed at a nearby satellite 10 room multi-specialty ASC in Scarborough, ME. MaineHealth is looking for an applicant who will be the future of this practice as the current ophthalmologist prepares to retire at the end of 2028. Ideal start time would be August 2027.

This position offers:

  • Working side by side with our current pediatric ophthalmologist who has 33 years of experience treating children and adults with strabismus and has built a thriving practice with an excellent reputation. The practice has a wide referral base of pediatricians, family practitioners, optometrists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, geneticists, pediatric rheumatologists and other pediatric subspecialists with a base of 250-300 thousand people. The present provider currently sees approximately 1600 new patients with 6000 total patient visits and more than 300 surgical procedures per year.
  • A current working environment within a private multispecialty ophthalmology practice with exam lanes dedicated to examining children and measuring strabismus. There is access to visual field testing, ophthalmic photography, corneal topography and other state of the art testing equipment. There is an excellent working relationship with the private practice ophthalmologists which includes retina, cataract, refractive surgery, glaucoma, oculoplastics and an emergency hospital consultation service.
  • The ability to provide direction in future growth of the practice.
  • A strong and collaborative team of COAs, support staff, OR staff).
  • A Tufts University School of Medicine faculty appointment (Assistant Professor) with opportunity to teach occasional medical students and pre-residency fellows.
  • A light call volume which is shared amongst the other ophthalmologists of the multispecialty practice.

Qualifications:

  • Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology
  • Completion of a United States fellowship training program in Pediatric Ophthalmology
  • Willingness to participate in ROP screening
