The Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time Clinical Instructor in Small Animal Internal Medicine (SAIM). This position is designed for a clinician-educator with a strong commitment to clinical teaching.

The Clinical Instructor will provide high-quality clinical instruction to DVM students, rotating interns, and residents while contributing to both synchronous and asynchronous teaching in the preclinical and clinical phases of the curriculum. The position emphasizes excellence in clinical education and collaboration within a multidisciplinary teaching hospital. While previous teaching experience is appreciated, applicants who have recently completed residency training and those with experience working in private practice are also encouraged to apply. This position has the potential to align with applicants' interests within SAIM subspecialties such as extracorporeal therapy, nephrology/urology, interventional radiology, feline medicine, or endocrine disease.

The SVM is a collegial, collaborative environment that offers specialty care with board-certified The SVM is a collegial, collaborative environment that offers specialty care with board-certified experts in allied services including anesthesia and pain management, cardiology, dentistry and oral surgery, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, nephrology/urology, neurology, medical and radiation oncology, ophthalmology, anatomic and clinical pathology, primary care, special species, and soft tissue and orthopedic surgery. Additionally, the hospital has a dedicated LCSW who meets with clients and offers support groups.

In 2024, UWVC opened a new state-of-the-art hospital. SAIM now has access to an expansive suite of interventional radiology and endoscopy equipment, including new Olympus flexible scopes, Storz rigid and resectoscope systems, Ho:YAG, CO2, and diode lasers, PET/CT imaging, a dedicated laparoscopy/endoscopy OR, a vascular IR suite, and standing videofluoroscopic swallow study capabilities. We also offer extracorporeal therapies including IHD, UF, plasmapheresis, and hemoperfusion jointly with the Emergency and Critical Care service. SAIM also treats 1-3 cats with I-131 weekly, a service greatly valued by the community.

Key Job Responsibilities: Clinical Teaching and Service

* Up to 36 weeks of clinical service per year in Small Animal Internal Medicine, allowing flexibility for educational and scholarly activities.

* Supervision and clinical instruction of fourth-year veterinary students, rotating interns, and residents on the SAIM service.

* Participation in patient care, case management, and clinical rounds within UW Veterinary Care.

* Active collaboration with faculty, technicians, and staff across specialty and allied services.

Didactic and Laboratory Teaching

* Participation in didactic and laboratory teaching within the DVM curriculum where instruction is delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous modalities, consistent with the OnWard curriculum design.

* Contributions and specific teaching assignments will be tailored to service and curricular needs as well as the instructor's expertise.

Scholarly and Professional Activity

* Opportunities to participate in collaborative clinical or educational research, based on interest.

* Support of house officer scholarly activity, including clinical research projects in support of residency requirements.

Service

* Participation in service activities at the section, department, or school level, commensurate with role and appointment.

* Contribution to continuing education activities for veterinary students and trainees, and when appropriate, for practicing veterinarians.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree with board certification in Small Animal Internal Medicine (DACVIM-SAIM) or DACVIM-SAIM eligibility by the start date.

Eligibility for a Wisconsin veterinary license by the start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior academic or teaching-focused clinical experience or experience working within a teaching hospital environment.

Education:

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree with board certification in Small Animal Internal Medicine (DACVIM-SAIM) or DACVIM-SAIM eligibility by the start date.
