Position description

The Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences in the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis seeks candidates for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Clin X or Health Sciences Clinical Professor in the field of Small Animal Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation to lead our sports medicine and rehabilitation service. The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) and the Northern California region provide a steady case load comprising of medical and post-surgical patients that will be supported by the service.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Creative Scholarship: Faculty are expected to advance the clinical discipline through creation and dissemination of new knowledge with documentation in peer-reviewed publications. Creative/scholarly activities are required for individuals in the Clinical X series, but in view of the increased responsibilities for clinical service and teaching, the type of scholarly activity may focus primarily on integrating/improving clinical care, conducting clinical research studies and/or improving veterinary medical education. Although creative scholarship is an expectation for the Health Sciences Clinical Professor track, it is typically derived from clinical teaching and professional service activities. Examples of activities qualifying as creative scholarship in this track include participation in the advancement of professional education; publication of case reports or clinical reviews; development of or contributions to administration (supervision) of a clinical service; or development of or contributions to clinical guidelines or pathways.

Clinical: The position includes a 70% clinical commitment to the Small Animal Sports Medicine Service of the VMTH (Professor of Clinical track) or a 90% clinical commitment (Health Sciences Clinical Professor track). Individual will be responsible for directing, instructing and supervising veterinary students and residents; providing health care and service to in-house and referral patients; and advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients.

Teaching: The primary teaching responsibility will be direct daily supervision and instruction of students and residents in the Small Animal Sports Medicine Service. Other responsibilities include: 1) participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum; 2) clinical teaching in the VMTH; and 3) participation in the graduate clinical (resident) training program of the VMTH.

Professional Competence: Advance the discipline within the VMTH, as well as locally and nationally, through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care in the hospital environment. Expected to establish reputation for clinical excellence locally, regionally and nationally, depending upon level of appointment. Must demonstrate clinical competence and be recognized for accomplishment in a focused area of clinical practice.

Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education and other appropriate means is required.

Must be eligible for veterinary medical licensing in the State of California (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Individuals must obtain a full CA license CA Business and Professions Code Section 4846 or a University license CA Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1 prior to beginning clinical duties.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Veterinarian with advanced training in small animal sports medicine and rehabilitation.

Board certification in the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR) or European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ECVSMR), or completion of an approved residency of the ACVSMR or ECVSMR by August 1, 2026.

Preference will be given to those candidates board-certified by ACVSMR or ECVSMR.

Documented clinical experience and competence in small animal sports medicine and rehabilitation.

Demonstrated aptitude and experience in teaching, particularly clinical instruction.

Documented record of creative scholarship or potential to develop a clinical research program in small animal sports medicine and/or rehabilitation is recommended.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team environment.

Must be eligible for veterinary medical licensing in the State of California (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Individuals must obtain a full CA license CA Business and Professions Code Section 4846 or a University license CA Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1 prior to beginning clinical duties.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

A PhD or equivalent, or advanced training in research (e.g. postdoctoral and fellowship) is preferred.

Board certification is preferred.
