THE POSITION

The Department of Agriculture is looking for candidates to fill a Livestock Worker position at Penn National Racetrack, where you will assist Veterinarians in handling horses and recording essential sample data. This role is crucial in ensuring compliance with the rules and regulations set forth by the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The Livestock Worker 1 role involves overseeing designated horses, collecting urine samples, packaging them according to established protocols, and completing necessary documentation, while also assisting with various farm tasks. This includes identifying the sample kit in the Test Barn Lab and verifying the sample numbers on the urine cup, blood tubes, security straps, and witness receipt. You will be responsible for escorting the assigned horse from the unsaddling area to the Test Barn, ensuring the horse is directed to a water bucket with clean, fresh water, and remaining present during the tattoo reading by Livestock Worker 2 to confirm validation. Throughout the sampling process, the you must maintain visual contact with the horse until all samples are collected, ensuring the horse drinks from the designated water bucket and stays in the Test Barn until the sampling is complete.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Permanent part-time employment
  • Work hours are 5:45 PM to 10:45 PM, Wednesday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • You will work closely with vendors and work hours may change based on vendor availability.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Experience in general farm work; and such training as may have been gained through completion of the eighth school grade; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Post Employment Requirement:

  • This position will require possession of a Commission Employee License once hired.

Preferred Qualification (not required):
  • Experience working with and around horses
