The goal of this five year research program is to examine the relationship between everyday environments and smoking cessation outcomes. Adults who smoke cigarettes (n=500) will be recruited to participate in a nationwide remote smoking cessation trial. In the two weeks prior to quitting smoking, they will be asked to take photos of their environment randomly throughout the day and each time they smoke. They will then quit smoking using nicotine replacement therapy and be followed for six months. State-of-the-art computer vision and machine learning techniques will be developed and used to increase our understanding of how environments affect cessation outcomes with the goal of developing novel environment-informed interventions to help people quit smoking.
