About the College of Veterinary Medicine:
The College of Veterinary Medicine ( CVM) is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education and is currently ranked 4th among the nation's colleges of veterinary medicine in the U.S. News and World Report survey. The college has gained international recognition on the strength of its teaching, research, engagement, and patient care efforts.
Located on 180 acres near downtown Raleigh, the College of Veterinary Medicine encompasses 20 buildings on the main Centennial Biomedical Campus. The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina and the Southeast. The VH is an integrated health care center for companion, equine and farm animals. We exist to further the teaching mission of the NC State CVM and to provide state-of-the-art patient care.
The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, more than 35,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students, interns and residents, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.
The College provides instruction and guidance to DVM students, graduate students and interns and residents. Instruction is in three departments: Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biomedical Sciences, and Population Health & Pathobiology. In addition to the four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, the college is the home of the NCSU Comparative Biomedical Sciences graduate training program, an umbrella program that provides interdisciplinary training for doctoral students across the entire NCSU campus.
The College's research enterprise is housed in 3 modern buildings on the CVM campus including the Biomedical Partnership Center ( BPC), a 40,000-square foot building that opened in 2017. The BPC houses CVM faculty in research laboratories shared with faculty from the College of Engineering, including the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at NC State and the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, as well as industry partners working in related biomedical research fields.

Essential Job Duties
This senior leadership role is a pivotal position within a world-class veterinary teaching hospital, reporting to the Hospital Administrator. The incumbent provides high-level operational oversight and strategic business direction, ensuring the hospital's financial viability, operational excellence, and achievement of its core mission in patient care, teaching, and research. This role is a full member of the hospital's senior management team, acting with a high degree of independence in decision-making and problem resolution. This role requires in-depth knowledge of hospital operations (preferably veterinary) and applicable state/federal regulations, combined with strong critical thinking to analyze information and make sound decisions. The ideal candidate must be a flexible leader capable of establishing clear direction, motivating staff, driving change initiatives, and utilizing strong communication skills to resolve client concerns.
Key Areas of Responsibility
The Associate Hospital Administrator and Director of Business Strategy assumes responsibility for the day-to-day administration and strategic direction of the hospital's core business and daily operations.

Business and Financial Strategy:

  • Oversee and direct daily business operations, including financial management, budgeting, forecasting, accounts payable/receivable, and auditing.
  • Develop and implement long-range strategic planning for business operations, assessing the financial impact of clinical and client service decisions.
  • Development and implementation of business plans for new and existing services.
  • Lead initiatives to research and implement business best practices to optimize financial performance and operational efficiency.
  • Prepare and present financial statements and budget reports to the Hospital Administrator and Hospital Board.


Operational Management and Leadership:

  • Provide direct supervision and leadership of assigned Directors and managers of clinical and support services.
  • Serve as the general manager for the hospital in the absence of the Hospital Administrator, ensuring the continuity of teaching, operating, and clinical objectives.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) across hospital services to ensure compliance and improve overall workflow.

Data, Projects, and Compliance:

  • Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for hospital operations data, responsible for data trending, reporting, and analysis to support compliance (e.g., COE, VMG) and strategic benchmarking.
  • Independently oversee and manage delegated strategic projects (e.g., capital improvements, EFAVC expansion) and project management for new equipment/facilities.
  • Work in consultation with Facilities Directors to schedule and coordinate hospital building projects and maintenance, minimizing operational impact.
  • Manage the technical and strategic aspects of Hospital Information Systems to ensure data integrity, privacy, and security.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of experience in the area of assignment, of which at least one is supervisory or in a lead-worker capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of hospital operations (preferably veterinary) and all applicable state and federal rules governing accredited veterinary teaching hospitals.
  • Proven ability to set clear goals, provide direction, and effectively motivate and engage employees through strong supervision and communication.
  • Capacity to question, analyze, interpret information, and make sound decisions and recommendations.
  • Strong listening and communication skills to effectively address and resolve client concerns.
  • Skill in planning and implementing change initiatives, encouraging innovation, and remaining flexible to meet evolving demands.
