Description

Reporting to Deputy News Editor David Malakoff, the AI in Science reporter will establish News from Science as the leader in covering how artificial intelligence, especially large language models, is transforming scientific research. The goal is to make Science required reading for scientists from other disciplines who want to understand the potential and pitfalls of these powerful technologies for their own work, young scientists wondering how AI might affect their careers and future workplaces, and policymakers interested in the implications of AI for the scientific enterprise.

This is a hybrid position, based in Science's Washington, DC, office.

What You'll Do



  • Identify stories by following social media, attending conferences, reading the literature, and cultivating sources in the field
  • Report and write stories, ranging from brief news items to features. Story types will include news, trends, narrative features, profiles, and career and community stories
  • Work with the Visuals team to come up with compelling ways to illustrate these often-abstract topics
  • Work with the social media producers to promote the AI coverage
  • Appear in short and long-form videos and podcasts as the face and voice of Science's AI coverage


Specific Areas of Coverage



  • New AI uses in specific research fields as well as interdisciplinary approaches
  • AI-accelerated scientific breakthroughs around the globe
  • Research to promote transparency, ensure integrity, and establish ethical guidelines in AI;AI in scientific publishing, including risks such as bias, plagiarism, and fraud, which threaten the integrity of the scientific literature
  • Forecasts on how AI might remake training, employment, and compensation in the scientific workforce


Minimum Requirements



  • Bachelor's degree in science or related field
  • Demonstrated reporting and writing skills
  • A record of covering AI in science

The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is $82,000 - $85,000 per year. AAAS currently provides the following benefits for this position: paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, paid holidays, health insurance, flexible spending account, dental insurance, life insurance, vision insurance, retirement benefits, short- and long-term disability, each subject to the terms of the applicable program. Additional benefits may apply.

Any actual offer of employment, reflecting the total compensation package and benefits, will be made in the sole discretion of AAAS and will be based on a variety of factors, including years of experience, depth of experience, and other relevant factors. AAAS reserves the right to amend or modify its employment benefits and compensation structure at any time.
