Intern - Software Engineer, Grid Planning (Summer 2026)

Join Itron's Grid Planning team as a Software Engineering Intern and contribute to the development of our new PowerAnalyzer module-technology that helps utilities model, analyze, and forecast changes to the electric grid. This role offers handson experience in fullstack development, data analysis, and modern engineering practices while learning the fundamentals of power engineering.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support development of the PowerAnalyzer module by gaining an understanding of product functionality, architecture, and purpose
  • Learn core concepts in power engineering and how they apply to grid modeling and forecasting
  • Assist with bug fixes, feature development, and test automation
  • Generate, prepare, and load test datasets for engineering analysis
  • Work with backend systems including PostgreSQL and (future) Snowflake.
  • Contribute to UI development using Node.js
  • Collaborate in code reviews and follow software architecture best practices
  • Support CI/CD pipeline improvements using Azure DevOps and other DevOps tooling

Duration: Summer 2026, 40 hours per week

Required Skills & Experience

  • Intermediate Python programming skills
  • Experience working with relational databases
  • Ability to analyze data
  • Understanding of software architecture principles: abstraction, design patterns, etc.
  • Ability to learn, curious and adaptable to changing priorities
  • Professional workplace communication and collaboration abilities
  • Able to work on site in Itron's San Jose office one day per week

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Advanced Python programming skills
  • Previous experience with source control systems (e.g. git)
  • Basic understanding of unix/linux and networking concepts
  • Related work experience

San Jose: $25-$57.69/hr.
