Literacy Instructor

Summary:

The Literacy Instructor is responsible for instructing out-of-school youths and adults in remedial education classes, preparatory classes for the General Educational Development (GED) test, literacy, or English as a second language. The Literacy Instructor is responsible for ensuring the educational goals of the students are obtained

The Literacy Instructor must demonstrate the leadership necessary to ensure the mission and Core Values are known and lived and must model the expected behaviors and performance. She/he must work in a collaborative manner with all other departments to ensure the overall mission is achieved.

Responsibilities:

Related to Instruction:

1. Conduct classes, in subjects such as basic English language skills, of GED.

2. Assign and grade class work.

3. Enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students.

4. Maintain Center's library as assigned by the Literacy Director.

5. Consult with students, volunteers and director on an as needed basis.

Related to the Working Environment:

6. Work within the established the workplace standards

7. Set example for volunteers by personal leadership role modeling

8. Ensure a safe and hazard free environment by following established processes and procedures that ensure the health and safety of Associates and all being served.

9. Communicate in a manner that is inclusive and respectful of each Associate.

Related to Associate Development:

10. Attend and participate in facility meetings.

11. Attend and participate in assigned education events.

12. Provide feedback through Associate Satisfaction surveys and other focus group/surveys to improve and maintain a great place to work.

Job Requirements:

Education/Skills

* Minimum of two (2) years experience in literacy education, adult education and/or basic education skills, with some classroom instruction.

* ESL Certification and/or college degree in a related field

* Ability to read, write and speak the Spanish language.

* Computer literate, ability to access, set up, and facilitates the computer programs that enhance instruction.

Experience

* One (1) year experience in classroom instruction, preferred.

* Volunteer experience, preferably with a non-profit organization.
