Summary:

Presbyterian is seeking a Sterile Processing Team Lead, you're the behind-the-scenes powerhouse who ensures surgical instruments and medical equipment are meticulously cleaned, assembled, sterilized, and delivered with precision. Working primarily in the Sterile Processing Department, you follow infection control and quality assurance protocols with an unwavering commitment, transforming high-risk tools into safe, ready-to-use assets that directly impact patient care across operating rooms, inpatient nursing units, and clinics. With keen attention to detail and mastery over decontamination and sterilization processes-including GI scope handling-you set the tone for safety and efficiency.
Beyond the technical expertise, you command inventory flow and orchestrate the maintenance and repair of vital equipment, always ensuring the OR is well-stocked and downtime is minimal. You bring deep equipment knowledge, organizational prowess, and leadership finesse to a high-stakes environment where consistency isn't just valued-it's life-saving. Responsibilities:

General Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs job functions of a Tech III
  • May act as a team lead, coordinating the work of others, but not a supervisor; no direct reports
  • Works independently and interdependently within established procedures and protocols
  • Decontaminates and sterilizes instruments and equipment; assembles, wraps (as applicable) and sterilizes trays of instruments, scopes and other medical equipment
  • Triages issues daily and appropriately diffuses or elevates to management based on severity of issue in accordance with patient safety policies
  • Serves as a resource for other staff members answering questions and providing instruction as necessary
  • Performs special projects as assigned by supervisor/manager
  • May have input into performance appraisals
  • May assist in developing and revising department procedures
  • Quality Assurance Monitoring:
  • Monitors biological and chemical solutions to ensure consistency and quality decontamination of instruments, scopes and equipment
  • Verifies sterilization, washing and decontamination equipment is functioning properly
  • Maintains high level disinfection and sterilization records per department protocol
  • Customer Service:
  • Ensures instruments, scopes and equipment are available to end users when requested
  • Coordinates instrument, scope and equipment needs with the Operating Room, Clinics and other end users
  • Instrument Repair and Maintenance of Instrument Sets:
  • Responsible for the coordination of the instrument repair process
  • Works with OR Team Leads to set instrument repair intervals
  • Proactively completes sets with missing instruments and if needed places order for missing instruments.
  • Daily Staff Assignments:
  • Makes day-to-day work assignments for department staff; monitors the progress of activities and projects
  • Assesses workload on an on-going basis and makes special assignments during peak and slow periods
  • Orientation and Education:
  • Participates in training and orientation of new technicians; directs, prioritizes and reviews work processes daily in coordination with the SPD Coordinator and the SPD Clinical Education Specialist
  • Professionalism:
  • Demonstrates effective written & oral communication skills.
  • Actively supports & contributes teamwork in the workplace.
  • Takes responsibility & is accountable for own professional work ethics.
  • Demonstrate responsibility in adhering to posted work schedules.
  • Performs other functions as required

Qualifications:

  • *High school diploma or GED required
  • *Has advanced skills and expertise in Sterile Processing work processes and activities with a minimum of 1 year experience required.
  • Current Sterile Processing certification (CSPDT) from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or Certified Registered Central Service Tech (CRCST) from the International Association of Healthcare Central
  • Service Materials Management (IAHCSMM) and Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist (CSIS) or Certified Flexible Endoscope Preprocessor (CFER) from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or from IAHCSMM (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) required within 6 months of hire.
