Overview

Engages and works with non-offending parents/caregivers of victims of child abuse. Supports parents/caregivers in person during appointments at the Center and through phone contact following the appointment. Assists the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) in assessing the needs of children and families and in making recommendations regarding safety concerns, mental health treatment and family support services. Collaborates with service providers and MDT members to assist families in accessing services and addressing barriers to recovery. Provides ongoing support to non-offending parents/caregivers throughout the child abuse investigation/assessment and assists with coordination of care.

Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

  • Provides support and crisis intervention to the parents/caregivers during the patient's appointment.
  • Assesses the need of patients and families and develops a plan of care (in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) that is specific to the needs of the patient/family.
  • Provides appropriate information to parents/caregivers and makes necessary referrals to service providers to ensure continuity of care.
  • Maintains ongoing contact with the family/caregiver to offer timely support, direction, and follow-up services.
  • Promptly completes documentation to ensure an accurate legal record of patient's care is maintained.
  • Serves on the Linn County Case Review Team to ensure that the needs of the patient/family are being met.
  • Obtains caregiver feedback regarding services provided at the Child Protection Center.

Relationship Building

  • Secures professional relationships and linkage agreements with mental health providers so that patients and families have prioritized access to mental health treatment.
  • Maintains/develops professional relationships within the community through active participation in community coalitions and meetings to better serve the patients and family/caregiver seen in the program.
  • Seeks out evidence-based, trauma focused community resources in order to maintain a directory of services for CPC patients, caregivers and family members.

Professional Development

  • Engages in professional development activities that will improve skills, shares information with colleagues and utilizes newly acquired knowledge to enhance services provided.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in the behavioral sciences.
  • Minimum of two years' experience working in the human services field.
  • Must possess certification as a victim advocate or be willing to apply for the Iowa Organization for Victim Assistance Service Providers (IOVA-CP) upon eligibility.
