Description

The purpose of this position is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation within the EMT - Basic scope of practice as established by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health - Office of Emergency Medical Services and the Town of Bloomfield's policies and procedures. Hours are part-time, 28 hours per week, with flexible day, evening and overnight hours.

Essential Job Functions :

  • EMTs provide an assessment of patients, determine necessary care and deliver emergency services by utilizing appropriate medical techniques and equipment.
  • Is responsible for the assessment, initial treatment, and transport of sick and injured persons to treatment centers in accordance with state and local protocols and BVA policies and procedures.
  • Assists in extricating trapped victims.
  • Observes and records patient condition, reaction to treatment, and any significant incidents. Reports such information to receiving physician or nurse.
  • Communicates with physicians and other medical personnel via radio/telephone
  • Demonstrate effective verbal communication skills when interacting with patients, other employees and volunteers.
  • Document patient information, condition and treatment while maintaining confidentiality and patient rights. Complete patient care reports and any other reports required by State statutes. Obtain patient billing information as well as necessary signatures.
  • Maintain cleaning standards of vehicle(s) and equipment used in providing emergency medical care.
  • Performs regular assigned shift duties (i.e. ambulance equipment check as well as vehicle readiness) and other administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Follows OSHA guidelines and practices.
  • EMTs operate an ambulance in conjunction with applicable Town safety policies, and traffic laws related to the operation of emergency medical response vehicles.
  • Notify Supervisor immediately of any accident involving the Town ambulance or any damage or loss to Town property. Complete a detailed incident report as the request of the Supervisor.
  • Work collaboratively and in a professional manner with all allied health and public safety personnel as well as your fellow EMTs but also able to work independently as well.
  • Maintains NREMT/State of CT EMT certification and demonstrates ability to properly use all BVA approved and provided medical equipment within the scope of practice

Knowledge, Ability and Skill :
Knowledge : Strong knowledge of the principles and practices of Emergency Medical Services and of current approved EMS methods and procedures as well as State of CT approved protocols; strong knowledge of the federal and state laws and regulations affecting EMS; thorough knowledge of appropriate EMS equipment and operations; knowledge of work hazards, safety practices and federal and state laws relating to safety; some knowledge of EMS billing operation; strong knowledge of computer applications related to EMS operations.
Ability: Ability to apply approved ambulance policies, procedures, practices and standards including State of CT DPH approved protocols for an EMT; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, state and federal officials, various groups and individuals; ability to prepare reports and maintain records; ability give written and oral instructions; ability to read and describe safety procedures;
Skill:Excellent verbal and written communication skills; skill in using the above mentioned office equipment; aptitude for working with people and maintaining effective working relationships with various groups to promote the best possible delivery of EMS services to the community.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED), a valid Emergency Medical Technician license and current CPR BLS certification. Previous experience as an EMT is preferred but not required. Must have a valid motor vehicle driver's license.
Applicants selected to continue in the process must submit legible copies of their current CPR certificate and EMT license prior to being scheduled for oral board examination.


Selection Process

All appointments and promotions shall be made according to merit and fitness for performing the functions of the position, including factors such as education, experience, aptitude, knowledge, character, ethics, or other qualifications that would determine the best candidate for the position. Examinations may include written, oral, physical, or performance tests or any combination of the various types of examinations. Offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory results on a background check, pre-employment physical, drug screening and verification of information on the employment application.
