Position Summary

The Chief Pharmacy Officer (CPO) is responsible for defining and orchestrating the strategic direction and business development for the strategic business unit. Pharmacy operations include all hospital pharmacy operations, ambulatory pharmacy (infusion services, ambulatory clinical pharmacy), pharmacy purchasing, retail pharmacy, pharmacy technology, medication safety, 340B and pharmacy compliance. This position requires independent judgment and discretion in decision making which varies widely in their nature and impact, interpretation of information relating to a operations and programs, complex data analysis, problem solving, and strong organizational and leadership skills.
This is a senior level executive position within MultiCare Health System (MHS) and is an integral part of the Executive Management Team, leading and shaping the future direction of MHS Pharmacy and contributing to the achievement of the system's strategic objectives for Pharmacy expansion and growth and cost containment. Other programs include the development and management of a pharmacy B2B strategy.
This position works closely with the Chief Administrative Officer and the enterprise pharmacy leaders in a team-oriented approach for planning and operations. This position requires development of strong, constructive relationships with multiple members of the Medical Staff. Work situations are varied requiring strong administrative and leadership skills, negotiation, complex data analysis, creativity, diplomacy, problem solving, and decision-making. This position requires broad ranging extensive internal and external contacts, which may involve the development of critical relationships. External contacts include competing organizations, consultants, and regulatory agencies. Internal contacts and interactions include all levels of staff and management.

Essential Functions

Continually defines and refines strategic direction for MHS Pharmacy

  • Constantly scans, assesses and the external environment, at both the regional and national level
  • Translates dynamic changes into market opportunities for Pharmacy
  • Brings forward innovative, new approaches that are focused on growth of Pharmacy operations to improve patient experience and safety, reduce pharmaceutical expenses, formulary management, and population health strategies
  • Participates in the development of new services, programs or businesses related to acute care and ambulatory pharmacy
  • Identifies potential partners for Retail Pharmacy and identifies strategy for developing those partnerships
  • Translates strategic direction into specific annual and multi-year objectives and business plans
  • Coordinates and oversees all contracting activities (manufacturers, payers, suppliers, etc.) related to Acute Pharmacy department

Provides facilitation and acceleration leadership to key MultiCare initiatives, utilizing an array of rapid deployment techniques

  • Provides executive leadership for the development and deployment of an innovative Pharmacy strategy

Provides direction and leadership of MHS Pharmacy, overseeing and coordinating the collective management to ensure the health system's objectives are met.

  • Clearly articulates and operationalizes MultiCare's Pharmacy vision.
  • Delegates administrative responsibility and provides direction to department AVPs, directors and managers for the daily and long-term management and development of assigned departments, establishing formal means of accountability.
  • Directs the planning and establishment of short- and long-term operating plans for assigned departments.
  • Directs the development and administers operating and capital expenditure budgets for the areas Pharmacy; monitors activities on an on-going basis and assures adherence to objectives and budgets.
  • Assists in overall management, budgeting, development of goals and objectives, and hiring and evaluation of key personnel.
  • Appraises the performance of direct reports annually.

Acts as an external spokesperson in local, state, and regional matters dealing with Pharmacy legislation and regulation.

Maintains relationships with voluntary and governmental agencies, which concern themselves with pharmacy activities.

  • Contributes to the success of the organization, keeping current on new developments within the MultiCare system, and by performing other duties as needed or assigned

Requirements

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree
  • Current Washington State Pharmacist License or eligible for licensure within 3 months of hire
  • Master's degree in Hospital Administration, business or a related field preferred.
  • Ten years of progressively responsible management experience, with at least five years as a senior level executive in pharmacy operations
  • Significant experience in a complex health system
  • Experience integrating programs and services to create greater system and customer value
