Position Summary
The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Department of Psychiatry invites applications for a full-time, fixed-term Licensed Clinical Social Work hire. The successful candidate will join a team of pediatricians, pediatric psychologists, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry ( CAP) faculty in the North Carolina Children's Hospital Consultation and Liaison service and in the Department's affiliated Behavioral Medical Integrative Health cohort of outpatient providers.

Clinical responsibilities will primarily include providing assessment, consultation, and treatment in pediatric inpatient settings with a population of toddlers through older adolescents with chronic medical illness. The position will involve working with parents or guardians involving issues of grief. Some amount of time will be required in an administrative role managing consult communication between the CAP team and pediatric physicians, residents, and staff. The position will require additional time developing an active and thriving outpatient service for children and families with or without medical illness and can involve independent psychiatric diagnoses including depression, behavioral diagnoses, and anxiety.

The position will involve direct patient care and some clinical case management with the purpose of meeting the mental health needs of children and families primarily with medical illness or medical trauma who present to a working group of UNC pediatricians for medical care. Children with new diagnoses or frequent hospitalizations will also be referred for consultation while inpatient in the NC Children's Hospital.

In this position the successful candidate will collaborate with psychiatrists and psychologists on the CAP service, attend team meetings and participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning. The successful candidate will consult with pediatricians, residents and allied health services.

The successful candidate will have strong multi-disciplinary consultative skills, knowledge of the promotion of coping in children and families with medical illness and experience in empirically valid models of therapy known to have success in medical populations. Specifically, anxiety and depression based CBT skills, Motivational Interviewing, and ACT or similar.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements


  • LCSW or LMHC North Carolina Licensed at time of hire
  • History of a completed internship with appropriate child and family systems training
  • Minimum 2 years of practice in the field post internship demonstrating independent practice skills
  • Strong therapy skills with multiple modalities including CBT
  • Experience in the treatment of children and adolescents and their guardians with medical dx
  • Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Interest and experience working with underserved and under resourced populations

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
