Job Summary (Primary function)

The Animal Care TechnicianIII partners with in-vivo scientists on requested technical procedures such asdosing, sample and data collection, or surgical support, and ensures that studies are conducted according to approved animal useprotocol and general practices.

Essential Functions of the Job (Key responsibilities)

  • Review, comprehend and comply with all procedures pertaining to laboratory animals for research, and familiar with applicable animal use protocols and general practices. With oversight of the LAR Supervisor, will liaise directly with in-vivo scientists for requested activities.
  • Proficient in aseptic techniques and perioperative care for rodent surgery.
  • Perform animal husbandry duties as needed.
  • Perform basic measurements as related to in-vivo studies (e.g., body weight and tumor size).
  • Participate in necropsy and tissue collection.
  • Responsible for training staff under the direction of LAR management.

Qualifications (Minimal acceptable level of education, work experience, and competency)

  • High school diploma, General Education Degree (G.E.D.) or equivalent required. Bachelor degree in Life Sciences, Associate degree orcertificate program in the life sciences with appropriate experience will be considered.
  • 3+ years of hands on animal study/technical support and applicable instrumentation.
  • AALAS Certification LAT or LATG level is preferred.
  • Ability to effectively follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledgeable in basic clinical signs for rats and mice, able to report accurate information to scientists, LAR management or veterinarian.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner with coworkers, research staff, and managers.
  • Proficient with use of various electronic data collection systems (e.g., Path Data and Study Log) and manual data collection/documentation.
  • Proficient in various dosing techniques.
  • Proficient in various approved methods of euthanasia.
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in proper rodent restraint methods.
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Regularly required to stand; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Required to walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Weekends and holidays required on a rotating basis.
