Department

Denver Health, the premier teaching hospital and safety net institution for the city of Denver and entire Rocky Mountain region, is seeking a PRN neuroradiologist for flexible, intermittent, in-person subspecialty coverage.

The Organization

Denver Health is an integrated, efficient, academic health care system that is considered a model for the nation. As Colorado's primary safety net institution, Denver Health provides the full spectrum of medical services from primary to oncologic care. Serving one third of the city of Denver, as well as patients from outside Denver, Denver Health provides primary care services via a citywide network of community health centers, school-based health clinics, and a new 7-story 293,000 square foot outpatient medical center. The trauma center sees 18,000 patients annually, 2700 of whom are admitted, and many of whom arrive as transfers from any one of 60 regional hospitals. The trauma service is extraordinarily academically productive with millions in grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and United States Department of Defense (DoD). The seminal text "Trauma" was authored by Denver Health faculty.

Denver Health is affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CU SOM). All faculty at Denver Health have CU SOM appointments and are valued participants in a variety of educational, research, and clinical collaborations. Faculty have access to the academic and cultural resources of Denver Health, CU SOM, and other affiliate institutions.

Position Summary

The candidate being sought will participate in the delivery of outpatient and inpatient neuroradiology services, including MR, CT, radiography, and basic spine procedures such as lumbar puncture. Given the volume and strength of the ED and trauma service at Denver Health, there is an emphasis on providing advanced, cutting edge, and highly collaborative care in the acute setting. Most of the imaging volume, however, is outpatient with Denver Health providing a full gamut of ambulatory imaging services. In addition to the neuroradiological imaging services currently offered, Denver Health seeks to continuously improve and innovate.

Denver Health neuroradiologists participate in the education of University of Colorado medical students, radiology and IR/DR residents, and fellows. There is a strong desire to continue to expand our educational offerings; the neuroradiology fellowship has recently expanded and includes a full-time rotating fellow at Denver Health.

The Department values patient-centered care and a highly collaborative work environment. There is a strong working relationship with neurology, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, internal medicine, and emergency medicine.

Reporting Structure

The radiologist will report to the Department Chair of Radiology with direct mentorship and supervision from the Chief of Neuroradiology. The department benefits from excellent administrative support. Most radiology staff (technologists, radiology RNs, transporters, etc.) report within the department, not to an external hierarchy, so there is alignment of staff and faculty towards the goals of the department.

Candidate Qualifications:

Education/Academic Credentials

• M.D., D.O. or foreign equivalent medical degree; board certification in Radiology; fellowship training and/or extensive experience in neuroradiology preferred; eligibility for licensure in Colorado.
• New graduates and experienced radiologists are encouraged to apply.

Experience

• Candidates should be competent in all modalities of neuroradiology, including basic spine intervention such as lumbar puncture and myelography. Opportunities to perform advanced spine intervention also exist.
• Prior record of academic or educational scholarship is preferred.
• Experience in teaching students and/or trainees is preferred.

Full-time positions at Denver Health offer full benefits, including an attractive 401(a) Social Security replacement savings program, a 457(b) retirement savings program, and employer matching contributions (9.5%). This position is for an intermittent position, without benefits.

Essential Functions:

• Review and interpret medical images to determine patient status and future medical care (20%)
• Determine exact images required for diagnosis and delivering orders to Radiological Technicians (20%)
• Administer trace amounts of radioactive substances to create and enhance diagnostic images (10%)
• Perform minimally invasive surgical techniques such as embolization, angioplasty and ablation with image guidance (10%)
• Work with Primary Care Doctors, Nurses and Radiology Technicians to administer treatment and manage pain (10%)
• Monitor patient progress and adjusting treatment plans as necessary (10%)
• Create a radiation treatment plan for patients with cancer (10%)
• Manage radiation side effects in cancer patients (10%)

Education:

• Doctorate Degree Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine from an accredited school of medicine Required

Licenses:

• BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required
• MD-Physician - State Medical Board Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures and techniques.
• Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment.
