Job Summary:

The Manager of Patient Transport is responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive patient transport program to meet the needs of patients and the organization at both Mary Washington and Stafford Hospitals. This position oversees the daily operations of the Patient Transport Department, ensuring safe and efficient patient movement 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Manager of Patient Transport leads continuous performance improvement initiatives to improve hospital efficiency, patient experience and quality patient care and ensures department alignment with organizational goals.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Oversees and optimizes patient transport and dispatch workflow processes to ensure efficient patient flow across departments, prioritizing transport needs based on acuity, urgency, and resources while balancing efficiency and patient safety.
  • Investigates, addresses, and resolves patient and staff concerns, including complaints and operational challenges, ensuring high-quality service delivery and satisfaction.
  • Develops and manages the department's operating plan and budget, ensuring efficient resource allocation and financial oversight. Monitors productivity and expenses to stay within budget and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Develops and leads employee orientation and ongoing training programs to equip transporters with the knowledge and skills required to navigate patient transport. demonstrating the importance of clinical and patient communication, and care coordination in the hospital environment.
  • Monitors and evaluates transporters' and dispatchers' performance, addressing gaps and providing coaching and professional development. Conducts Associate check-ins and comprehensive performance appraisals to ensure accountability in meeting operational and patient care expectations.
  • Collaborates with senior leadership to communicate key operational activities, ensuring alignment between daily transport operations and broader organizational objectives. Provides regular updates to leadership on performance, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Coordinates and manages staffing and scheduling for the Transport Dispatcher and Patient Transport teams, ensuring 24/7 coverage while optimizing labor resources with operational needs.
  • Collaborates with clinical staff and interdisciplinary teams to optimize transport staff and equipment use and develop/enforce policies to improve system-wide efficiencies.
  • Collects, analyzes, and reports key performance data, including transport volumes, turn-around-times, productivity, staff performance, and financial outcomes. Implement action plans based on data to drive continuous improvement in operational performance.
  • Collaborates with MWHC Hub Command Center to align system-wide capacity needs. Oversee the Transport Dispatcher in managing transport assignments to effectively meet capacity requirements.
  • Ensures continuous compliance with Joint Commission standards by regularly reviewing and updating policies, procedures, and staff training related to patient transport. Conducts audits and performance improvement activities as needed to ensure adherence to standards.
  • Oversee the readiness of patient transport equipment, ensures proper storage in designated and approved locations, and collaborates with the biomedical engineering department to address any equipment issues.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Associate's degree in healthcare management, business or related field.
  • 1-2 years in management/supervisory experience required, preferably in acute hospital setting / patient transport services.
  • Demonstrated leadership and critical thinking abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Strong communication and team building skills.
  • Strong computer and technical skills.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare management, business, or related field.
  • Experience with acute care hospital patient transport services.
  • Experience with developing staffing and scheduling plans, managing productivity, and budgeting activities.
