DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Cook 1, you will play a central role in the Dietary Department by overseeing the preparation and production of meals for the juvenile justice population. You will be responsible for the high-level execution of cooking tasks, ensuring that raw ingredients are converted into finished menu items according to a precise schedule. This role requires a high degree of accountability regarding food service quality, inventory management, and the procurement of necessary supplies to keep the kitchen running efficiently. Beyond technical cooking duties, you will serve as a lead worker by coordinating and supervising tasks performed by participants in the Work Training Program. This work involves assigning routine food production duties, inspecting student work for quality, and providing guidance to ensure all safety and sanitation standards are met. Additionally, you will assist with maintaining updated recipe files and managing dietary materials to support the facility's mission. By balancing specialized culinary production with the mentorship of student workers, you will help maintain a clean, safe, and supportive environment dedicated to providing optimum care and vocational training for the youth in our charge.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM (1st Shift) and 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM (2nd Shift), with rotating days off. This may change based on operational needs.
    • Varying 8-hour shifts to include weekends and holidays, 5-day work week with 2 days off
  • Overtime and travel as operationally necessary
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $40,956.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Desirable Preparation for Work:

  • Experience in cooking or quantity food preparation; or any equivalent combination of experience and/or training.
Other Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
