About the Job

Essential Functions

  • With oversight by a DVM, anesthetize, monitor, and treat anesthesia patients: canine, feline, equine, bovine, caprine, ovine, and other exotic species.
  • Prepares patients for a variety of veterinary medical procedures, radiographic procedures, catheterizations, venipunctures, anesthesia, administration of medications and treatments, post-operative care, etc.
  • Under the direction of DVM's, perform, teach, and train veterinary procedures to veterinary students, orient and evaluate students to service areas.
  • Provide excellent service to DVM's and medical teams that support quality patient care.
  • Facilitate open communication and teamwork among clinical care team members (DVM's students, veterinary technicians, etc.) in support of positive patient outcomes and excellent patient care.
  • Must be able to restrain and handle animals and/or assist with animal restraint and handling.
  • With oversight by a DVM performs complex patient care procedures depending upon clinical indications and area of service; may perform intravenous and related therapies (i.e. fluids, chemotherapies, and anesthesia), obtain fluid or tissue samples, perform biopsy techniques, etc.
  • Under the direction of DVM's perform and assist with special procedures.
  • Liaison between clinicians, clients and staff.
  • Assists clinicians, clients and patients with triage, assessment, work-up, discharge, etc.
  • Administers medications as defined by the duty clinicians.
  • Applies clinical job knowledge and competence to the management of the patient.
  • Reports changes in patient status to Clinician
  • Participates in CPR
  • Delivers outstanding customer service including (for example) greeting and receiving patients and clients in a caring and courteous manner, answering phone calls promptly, responding to clients, co-workers, and medical staff needs and requests, redirecting calls, etc.
  • Answers questions and explains or demonstrates procedures and equipment for residents, interns, senior veterinary students, and technician students.
  • Performs record-keeping tasks related to medical procedures, including recording of: procedures completed, supplies used, patient status, client communications, census information, etc.
  • Responsible to ensure that all services and supplies are charged according to hospital fee schedule.
  • Must have the ability to work in a clinical setting.
  • Must adhere to VMC safety and infection control policies and procedures.

Other Functions

  • Assists in other service areas; develops skills that are cross functional and uses time efficiently including helping other areas of the hospital.
  • Maintains a clean environment in the hospital area and ensures that these areas are adequately ordered, stocked and that equipment is in working order.
  • Participates in daily rounds.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Clinician, or Director.

Work Environment

This work is generally performed at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and the Veterinary Medical Center.

This work environment may include exposure to noise, bright/low lighting, temperature variations, animal bodily fluids and waste, and allergens such as mold, dust, hay and animal hair and dander.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday 8am-430pm, one week per month through the summer

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be included in the application materials

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of Veterinary Technician or equivalent program
  • Certified as MVMA/MAVT technician
  • Five years of experience in the veterinary medical field including at least 2 years assisting DVM's as a certified technician
  • Ability to act independently with little or no supervision

Preferred Qualifications/Selection Criteria

  • Problem solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of veterinary medicine terminology
  • Knowledge of proper restraint and handling of large and small animals
  • A willingness to be flexible to meet patient care needs
  • Certified technician with certification recognized in Minnesota
  • Two years of veterinary technical experience preferred
  • Proficiency with PC and software programs.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $33.75/hr; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
