Position Summary
The Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina ( UNC) School of Medicine at Chapel Hill is seeking an open rank, fixed term faculty specializing in Addiction Medicine to join its multidisciplinary clinical services. This position is primarily clinical in nature and will focus on providing evidence-based assessment, treatment, and program development for adolescents and adults with substance use disorders ( SUD), including individuals with co-occurring psychiatric conditions and trauma-related concerns.

Primary responsibilities include outpatient clinical care within the UNC Substance Treatment and Recovery ( STAR) Clinic, consisting of assessment, individual, and group psychotherapy delivered via in-person and telehealth modalities. The position also includes participation in the Addiction Medicine Consult Service through trainee supervision; direct inpatient clinical care may be incorporated over time based on programmatic needs and faculty role development.

This position includes significant teaching, supervision, and program leadership responsibilities. The faculty member will provide clinical supervision to psychology interns and fellows (approximately two interns and one fellow annually) and may supervise trainees from other disciplines. The role includes serving as the Addiction Medicine Program Coordinator within the Clinical Psychology Internship Program, with responsibilities for rotation oversight, trainee evaluation, and development of didactic content. Additional teaching activities may include didactics for psychology trainees, Addiction Medicine fellows, psychiatry residents, and other interprofessional learners, as well as facilitation of process groups for fellows.

Faculty are expected to contribute to the academic mission of the department through clinical care, education, research, and service. Scholarly activity, including research, program evaluation, or quality improvement initiatives, is encouraged. The ideal candidate will have experience in the assessment and treatment of substance use disorders across levels of care, demonstrated effectiveness in supervision and teaching, and the ability to work within interdisciplinary teams. A commitment to expanding access to high-quality addiction treatment and serving diverse populations is essential.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • A doctoral degree in psychology.
  • Experience in supervision of psychology graduate students or trainees.
  • Applicants are required to have experience working with substance use disorders.
  • Experience and success working well within a multidisciplinary environment.
  • North Carolina Licensure by start date of the faculty position.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Training in inpatient and outpatient addiction medicine/substance use disorder recovery, including prior completion of an APA-accredited internship and structured psychology fellowship in substance use recovery.
  • Experience in an academic medical setting or primary healthcare setting strongly preferred.
