Job Summary

We are seeking a Medical Lab Technician I to join a busy Core Laboratory and Physician Office Laboratory (POL) in Blacksburg, VA. The ideal candidate will have experience in clinical laboratory testing, phlebotomy, and specimen processing while delivering accurate and timely patient results. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced healthcare environment.


Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform routine laboratory testing and technical procedures in the Core Laboratory and Physician Office Laboratory (POL) according to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Collect blood specimens through venipuncture (approximately 15-20 draws per day).
  • Perform Point-of-Care (POC) testing, urinalysis, urine microscopic examinations, and wet prep testing.
  • Determine specimen acceptability for testing according to established laboratory criteria.
  • Process, label, prepare, and distribute specimens for testing while maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instrumentation to ensure proper functionality.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, calibration, and quality control procedures and document all required activities.
  • Prepare, test, and evaluate laboratory reagents, controls, and supplies as needed.
  • Analyze test results, identify discrepancies, and make appropriate technical decisions regarding testing and problem resolution.
  • Report accurate and timely laboratory results to support quality patient care.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and laboratory documentation using laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Assist with inventory management and replenish laboratory supplies as needed.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and laboratory staff to ensure efficient workflow and excellent patient service.
  • Maintain compliance with CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and all laboratory safety regulations.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Support additional laboratory operations and specimen processing as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT), Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or equivalent qualification meeting CLIA testing personnel standards.
  • Previous experience working in a Core Laboratory.
  • Hands-on phlebotomy experience with the ability to perform approximately 15-20 venipunctures per day.
  • Experience performing Point-of-Care (POC) testing and routine clinical laboratory procedures.
  • Knowledge of specimen processing, laboratory quality control, and preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computers; experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) is preferred.
  • Ability to pass a standardized color vision screening.
  • Flexibility to work overtime or additional hours based on business needs.


Preferred Qualifications

  • ASCP or AMT certification preferred.
  • Experience with urinalysis, urine microscopy, and wet prep testing.
  • Familiarity with CLIA, CAP, and OSHA laboratory standards.


Work Environment

This position is based in a busy Core Laboratory and Physician Office Laboratory (POL) serving a patient-facing healthcare environment. Candidates should be comfortable working in a fast-paced setting while balancing laboratory testing responsibilities with specimen collection and patient interaction.
