Job Summary

The Afterschool Counselor is responsible for picking up children from their respective schools and bringing them to their 92NY Afterschool Clubhouse rooms (classrooms divided by grade). They will be responsible for the general safety, development, and growth of the children as well as supporting them with their homework. The counselor will provide quality educational and recreational experiences.

Afterschool's year runs from September 14th- June 11th.

Staff hours are from 2:20-6:40 pm. This may change based on the needs of the program.

There will be mandatory staff training in advance of the start date as well as bi-monthly staff meetings after children are dismissed.



Job Responsibilities Include

    Communicate regularly with the Director, Associate Director, or Program Coordinator regarding observations, concerns, or individual child needs.
  • Supervise children daily, including pick-up from local Upper East Side elementary schools such as PS 77, PS 198, PS 527, PS 6, PS 151, Hunter College Elementary School, and TAG.
  • Escort children safely to and from enrichment classes within 92NY and make sure that they are there on time.
  • Create and implement age-appropriate curriculum and activities aligned with monthly Afterschool themes.
  • Collaborate with the Room Supervisor and fellow counselors to implement curriculum and support all children in the program.
  • Support the Room Supervisor in implementation of routines and schedules in the Clubhouse.
  • Provide homework assistance and academic support as needed.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment that promotes children's confidence, independence, and self-worth.
  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all children while they are under your supervision.
  • Participate in staff orientation, trainings, and meetings.
  • Review, understand, and adhere to all Afterschool policies and procedures as outlined in the Staff Manual, including dress code requirements and emergency protocols.


Experience, Education, & Skills Desired

  • Pursuing Bachelor's or Master's degree in Education or related field preferred.
  • Experience teaching specialty activity in a school, camp, or youth program environment
  • Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks independently
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.


Work Environment & Requirements

Per Diem Compensation Range

$17 - $24/hour

The actual compensation offered will be based on a number of factors including, but not limited to the qualifications of the applicant, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
