Position Description

Your Opportunity:

Join a national-level science and security project. As a Metrology Engineer supporting the Scorpius flash X-ray accelerator, you'll work with a multi-laboratory team that includes Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the Nevada National Security Site.

This team is installing and commissioning a one-of-a-kind accelerator that will remain permanently in Nevada and directly supports the U.S. nuclear security mission.

What You will Do:


  • Support precision alignment and measurement of accelerator components and subsystems
  • Perform hands-on metrology using laser trackers, profilers, scanners, articulating arms, and CMMs
  • Independently set up, operate, and troubleshoot laser trackers and associated tooling in the field
  • Assist with setup, data collection, and post-processing to verify requirements and tolerances
  • Use metrology software (e.g., SpatialAnalyzer, PolyWorks, Verisurf, or similar) for data acquisition, alignment, analysis, and reporting
  • Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and accelerator engineers during installation and commissioning
  • Apply GD&T to real hardware in a complex, large-scale system
  • Contribute to metrology planning, tooling selection, setups, and measurement strategies
  • Interpret tracker data, coordinate systems, uncertainty budgets, and alignment results to support installation decisions

What You Will Need:


  • 2-6 years of hands-on metrology or precision measurement experience
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent practical R&D experience
  • Direct experience setting up and operating laser trackers in a field or installation environment
  • Working experience with SpatialAnalyzer or similar large-scale metrology softwareperience
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and measurement accuracy/limitations
  • Comfortable working onsite near Northen Las Vegas in Mercuy, Nevada on an active installation project
  • U.S. citizen able to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) Q clearance


Nice to Have


  • Experience with accelerator systems, pulsed-power systems, or large scientific hardware
  • Familiarity with Keyence laser profilers or similar systems
  • Exposure to ASME Y14.5 or ASME B89 standards
  • Experience designing or using custom metrology fixtures, tooling, or alignment aids
  • Advanced use of SpatialAnalyzer features such as bundle adjustments, transformations, and automated workflows


Work Location & Contract


  • Onsite at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS)
  • 2-year contract role supporting installation and commissioning (1099 vs FTE optional)
  • Relocation assistance provided
  • Occasional coordination with national laboratory partners
