Description

Does the challenge of developing effective algorithms that fuse information from a wide variety of sources excite you?

Do you thrive in a collaborative research environment, working alongside an energetic, multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers?

Are you ready to help the US secure and maintain leadership in the development and fielding of information fusion algorithms for non-kinetic defense systems?

If so, we are looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!

We are seeking a highly motivated algorithm developer who will contribute to all phases of the data fusion algorithm development process. You will be joining a team of engineers and scientists who are at the forefront of APL's mission to provide innovative solutions to critical challenges.

Accurate, timely, and actionable information derived from a variety of sources provides the warfighter advantages over its adversaries. Our group at APL identifies, develops, and appliesefficient and effective algorithms that leverage successes from estimation theory, information theory, anddata science. We produce critical multi-source data/information fusion and resource management algorithms for a variety of DoD missions.

In this role, you will:

  • Investigate, develop, prototype, and communicate solutionsthat improvewarfightercapabilities
  • Designand exerciserigorous testing and validation methodologiesto determine if/whenalgorithmsfulfillwarfighter needs/requirements
  • Interact withlarge data sets ofvarious types, formats, and structures in a clear and appropriate manner to enable robust pre-processing, normalization,or other manipulations as needed
  • Prepare and present technical evaluations of algorithms to a broad audience that includes both decision makers as well as technical peers
  • Create, develop, and debug codeto include the following:generatemeaningful dataplots; implement and/or exercise algorithms, and contribute to various multi-user software test beds

Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • BS degree in engineering, mathematics, computer science, or related field
  • Courses in linear algebra, calculus, and one or more programming languages(e.g., MATLAB, Python, C, C++)
  • Strong interest instatistics, probability, estimation theory, information theory, anddata scienceor related subjects, including past course work or work experience in one or more of these areas
  • Ability to look critically at pre-processed data, algorithm output, and analysis results to identify potential issues and formulate key observations
  • Excellentwritten and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to balance near-term requests with long term goals
  • Ability to workcollaboratively andeffectively with a team
  • Ability to obtain a Interim Secret clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

Desired qualifications

  • MS degree in engineering, mathematics, computer science, or related field
  • 2+ years of experience applying one or more of the following: stochastic processes, detection and estimation theory, information theory, Bayesian inference of time varying systems, tracking and data fusion algorithms (e.g., KF, MHT, IMM, etc.)
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following:matrix calculus, object-oriented programming languages, data structures used in programming languages, sensing modalities (e.g., RF, EOIR)
  • Demonstrated ability to perform analyses using large data sets and complex code bases
  • Demonstrated effective ability to contribute to and maintain team code base using version control, such as Git
  • Experience building presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences, effectively communicating high-level findings from analyses or other projects
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time, as needed
